What is going on the world?

When thinking about the “D” word… Diabetes one of the first things that comes to mind the vast majority of times is Glucose levels or “Blood Sugar Levels.” While this is an important number to keep track of there is also an often secondary number that plays a critical role as well. This number is not talked about nearly as frequently but it should be. This number can help you get a deeper understanding of what your body is doing in order to achieve the Glucose level you are seeing when testing.

Insulin Resistance - Insulin resistance, identified as an impaired biologic response to insulin stimulation of target tissues, primarily involves liver, muscle and adipose tissue.

Imagine you're in your car on a cold winter day. You are driving in an area with a speed limit of 10 miles per hour or about 16 kilometers per hour. You look outside and it looks like your probably going about the right speed, but your just not sure. What is a person to do… you decide maybe you should check your speedometer. When you look down, to your surprise the speedometer says your going 55mph or 88kmh!! How could this be? Is this good for my vehicle? Is this good for my safety and all those around me? You realize your on a patch of ice and your wheels are spinning, your vehicle is working much harder than it would appear if you're just glanced out the window at your surrounding moving by. This is a simple way of explaining Insulin Resistance.

If all you do is check your Glucose numbers when you go to the doctor, everything may appear to be ok, BUT checking your fasting insulin levels just may be another test to think about. If your body is having to dump larger than normal amounts of insulin in your body to maintain “normal” Glucose levels, this is also a sign that something may need to change. Imagine that vehicle spinning its wheels at 55mph to only be moving at 5mph, this is not ideal for your vehicle nor your body.

So what’s the new happenings in the world?

Researchers have discovered a type of gut bacteria that might help improve insulin resistance, and thus protect against the development of obesity and type-2 diabetes. This research is in the early stages, but it is fascinating to know there is new researching looking for way to help a large portion of the population.

Why are Starting your Fitness Endeavors so difficult?

While identifying your goals can often times be a challenge. Learning how to set smarter goals can be a great start. Sometimes we get too impatient with ourselves and we think this should be as easy as writing down a few bullet points, but if we want to optimize for success goals need to be well thought out. There can sometimes be anxiety around going to the gym or even just the first workout. One helpful tip could be to ensure you have an appropriate plan with small attainable goals. When you do go to the gym work to keep your laser focus on these goals. It may take some practice to be able to drown out all the happenings in the gym setting or even at at home for a workout but with practice and focus it IS possible. Prioritize each step in the right direction and make it happen.
